As we wait to learn the facts from the Mueller investigation, some thoughts.
This is certainly a defining moment in American history. Speculation is all but worthless as we’ve seen throughout the entire arch of Trump’s Presidency. I’ll offer some facts and options to contemplate:
1. Regardless of the results we can have confidence that Mueller has done a thorough and credible job. That does not mean he did or could have found every crime but I trust if Mueller did not, no one could have. Let’s not burn down the nation on that point.
2. It ain’t over. I’ve believed for a while that the best chance to successfully prosecute Trump is the investigation by New York State looking at his financial and tax transactions. Many are clearly fraudulent and Federal Courts have no jurisdiction unless the Supreme Court wants to wade into State’s rights. That is not all-together impossible but unlikely given the primacy conservatives give to States.
3. No matter any of that, about 60% of Americans do not like or support Trump on any given day. It is our solemn (I use the word in it’s full context) obligation to bring that majority to understand that action, not JUST words is necessary. We still have enough power to take our nation back from the brink. Gerrymandering, unlimited donations by the wealthy, challenges to voting rights, denigration of legitimate media and right-wing manipulation of social media can still be overcome. But just and only if we vote our outrage in 2020.
Now is the last best opportunity we have. We must put our progressive, moderate, liberal, socialist, independent, non-voting and Democratic divisions aside for the 2020 vote. There will be one candidate capable of winning and ending this nightmare. One candidate, but we do no know which one. Regardless, it will be whomever obtains the Democratic nomination. No unaffiliated candidate has the ability to win without the support of a major party. We only need the candidate who can demonstrate honor and vision. That candidate is our hope.
After the humiliation Trump has brought upon America, if we do not stand up as a block and declare our choice, the easiest choice we’ll ever have – honor above dishonor – only then have we failed.
